Heat Treatment
Heat Treatment
Heat treatment is a process where wood is heated in a controlled chamber until it reaches a core temperature of 56°C (133°F) for at least 30 minutes. This effectively eliminates pathogens such as insects, fungi, and other microorganisms, ensuring the wood is safe for international trade.
ISPM 15 Compliance
Many countries are members of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) and follow strict trade regulations for wood packaging materials. ISPM 15 is the global standard requiring wood used in packaging to be treated to eliminate pests. Compliance can be achieved through heat treatment or chemical fumigation.
Why Heat Treatment?
Wood packaging in international trade can spread pests, causing serious ecological and economic problems. ISPM 15, established by the FAO, sets globally approved measures to reduce this threat. Non-compliance may result in penalties, shipment refusal, or re-export.
